Landmark Judgments

·  In the landmark Shah Bano case, 1985, Supreme Court held that an old divorced Muslim woman was eligible for maintenance money by her husband. The decision was opposed to the muslim personal law in which there was no provision to support a divorced wife. The decision was vociferously opposed by fundamentalist Muslim leaders, who alleged that the court was interfering in their personal law. The case led to the enactment of the Muslim Women's (Protection of Rights Upon Divorce) Act in 1986 by the Central Government.
