Every Indian citizen has been given certain Fundamental Rights by the Constitution of India to protect his interests against exploitation. Similarly, the Constitution of India bestows on every citizen of India certain Fundamental Duties. These are the moral obligations of all citizens of India towards their country and makes them duty-bound to help promote a spirit of patriotism and to uphold the unity of India.
There are in all eleven Fundamental Duties. These duties are given in Part IV ∼ A of the Constitution of India under Article 51(A). Originally, the Constitution of India did not contain these duties. The 42nd Constitution Amendment Act, 1976 incorporated ten Fundamental Duties in Article 51(A) of the Constitution of India, upon the recommendations of the Swaran Singh Committee. The Fundamental Duties were increased to eleven by the 86th Constitutional Amendment in 2002.
